BELLFLOWER -Two of the premier Salesian schools in the country met last Friday in Bellflower, California on the campus of St. John Bosco High School with the Braves defeating the visiting Ironmen 56-21 in Panish Family Stadium.
The meeting of these two Salesian schools took much planning and effort on both sides of the country (cross country travel, hotel accommodations, preparing the stadium for another televised game, etc...) and the first time meeting on the field did not go unnoticed.
Three of the last 10 "mythical" national championships for high-school football have been won by these two schools (Don Bosco Prep: 2009, 2011; St. John Bosco: 2013).
As both teams prepared for the contest, the Braves looked better on paper but we all know games are played on the field where the winner is determined.
The Ironmen won the coin toss and deferred to the 2nd half. The Braves did not score on their first drive but the flood gates opened up as the offense began to roll, the defense was solid as a rock, and miscues by the Ironmen (especially on Special Teams) all contributed to a 28-8 lead at the end of the 1st quarter which ballooned to a 42-14 lead at the half.
A majority of the second half had the Braves 2's and 3's versus the Ironmen's 1st team players.
One of the most impressive plays of the game was DJ Uiagalelei's 1st quarter touchdown run where he would not be denied using his legs and sheer willpower as he literally carried Ironmen in the end zone with him.
After the game, Bosco Head Coach Jason Negro shared his thoughts...
Here are two good write-ups of the game from two different perspectives: California and New Jersey.
