First Practice In Pads & The Best Thing I Saw Today

BELLFLOWER -- Today, the St. John Bosco Football program held its first practice in pads in its campus' Panish Family Stadium.

After spring football and a summer of workouts in shirts and shorts as well as two 7-on-7 passing tournaments and one lineman competition, the players finally got to put on their pads after receiving their helmets last week.

With the temperature reaching the low 90's on the turf, the coaches, trainers, and student-managers made sure all Braves were well hydrated. In addition, the student-managers used drones to film the practice so that the coaching staff can critique and evaluate not only the players but the overall practice.

In his 10th year as the Head Coach of the football program, Coach Jason Negro has continually stressed that he and his staff are educators for those student-athletes who choose to participate in the Bosco football program.

In fact, the best thing I saw today during practice was not one of his coaches educating (i.e., teaching) one of the student-athletes but rather one of his own players doing the teaching.

Senior offensive lineman, Drake Metcalf, who recently committed to Stanford University, was caught teaching a younger offensive lineman about technique and positioning.

As a witness to Drake's tutorial, I was impressed with his patience and willingness to share his competency of his position to a fellow teammate--undoubtedly, one of the side benefits (to have players who can teach their peers) of having a football program and not just a football team.

There were many other good things I saw today like senior quarterback DJ Uiagalelei (who is committed to Clemson University) coaching up his fellow younger quarterbacks with words of encouragement and advice.

Similarly, there were some bad things I witnessed too--which Coach Negro certainly made note of so that he and his staff will undoubtedly correct in future practices with special motivational techniques.

At the end of the day, it's the beginning of big boy football and the countdown begins...only 19 Days until the Braves first game versus the Stags of DeMatha Catholic High School in Maryland in the Panish Family Stadium on Bosco's campus on Saturday, August 24th.
